| Frequently Asked Questions If you have a question that is not answered here call (949) 248-7400 or send us an e-mail. Do you raise the sails? The wind does not always go in the same direction or at the same speed as the whales do, therefore we do not raise the sails. Instead, our boats are motored (go out under power). If you wish to actually go "sailing" then we can arrange a private sailing charter for you. When is the best month/time of day to spot a whale? Generally, there is no particular month or time of day during the migration season that increases your chances of viewing whales.Do I need to have 6 people to make a reservation? You do not need to have six people to sign up. However, at our discretion we may require a 4-person minimum for reservations. What should I bring with me? A camera is a must-have item! You might also want to bring binoculars, hat, or sunscreen. You are also welcome to bring beverages and snacks on the boat. What should I wear? Dress in layers with comfortable and casual clothes. Definitely bring a warm jacket or sweater because sometimes it can be a bit cool on the water. All passengers should wear soft-soled tennis shoes only. No boots or high-heels please! (For safety reasons, passengers that are not wearing proper foot attire may be asked by the Captain to remove their shoes.)What is your cancellation policy? We do not allow any cancellations for any date once you have made a reservation. Please reconfirm with all members of your group prior to booking. If you need to reschedule your trip, we require that you notify us a minimum of 3 days prior to your charter date. What happens if there is bad weather?
Should I tip the Captain? How far out do you go to see the whales? The Gray Whales usually follow the coastline somewhat closely - there have even been sightings just outside the harbor entrance! So our boats only need to go out a mile or two.Can you guarantee sightings?
How close does the boat get to the whales? Do I need to make a reservation in advance? Although we can sometimes take last minute sign-ups, we highly recommend that you call and make a reservation in advance. If you plan to go during the Festival of Whales we recommend calling a couple of weeks in advance.Do you provide food and refreshments on the boat? In our effort to continue offering whale watching tours at a low price we regret that we are unable to provide food and beverage service. However, you are welcome to bring aboard your own snacks and drinks. For safety reasons we ask that you do not bring glass bottles.Do children or infants count as a passenger? Yes, children of any age are counted as a passenger. The United States Coast Guard considers every person, except for the Captain, as a passenger. Also, any child under the age of 13 must wear a USCG approved Type 1 PFD (life jacket) provided by Dana Island Yachts during the charter. Children require supervision by parent or guardian at all times and must be capable of remaining calmly seated for several hours. Can I bring more than 6 passengers on the sailboat?
Are your sailboats safe? Will I get seasick? The majority of individuals don't get seasick. But concerned passengers could bring products that contain ginger, such as ginger cookers or Ginger Ale, because they have been known to help calm an upset stomach.Do I get a ticket or confirmation number when I make a reservation? How do I make a reservation? Please call us at 1-949-248-7400. We're open 7 days a week. Why Dana Point is "The Whale Capital of The West"? Located midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, experts believe the 200-foot cliffs jutting out into the sea at Dana Point serve as a landmark for the migrating whales. Approximately 25% of the migrating whale population follows the coastline throughout their migration, coming especially close to shore at Dana Point. During peak season, (December through March), 40 to 50 whales pass by Dana Point every day, making Dana Point Harbor the best spot to Whale Watch in Southern California and a popular destination for winter vacationers. In addition to California Gray Whales, Humpback Whales, and even pods of Killer Whales have been spotted in recent years. The Harbor's design allows for quick access to the open water, allowing more time for whale watching (and less time traveling out to sea). Can I bring my dog (or other animal)? All of our boats are privately owned, therefore we do not allow animals on board unless the dog is specifically for a visually-impaired individual. Can I bring fishing gear with me? Our luxury sailboats do not have the necessary equipment nor do they carry the required state of California permits for sportfishing. However, we can arrange a private sportfishing charter.
